PSYCHOPOMP

London, 2026

Ultima Canticum is an ambient and experimental project by UK-based duo Paul Bavister and Tim Blazdell. Originally conceived as a side project alongside their work in architecture and performance practice, the duo combines advanced computational algorithms, experimental creative techniques and traditional performance practice to create expansive soundscapes and musical sculptures. Their first three EPs were conceived as interconnected chapters within a larger narrative. With Psychopomp, their latest release on NOOX, the duo pauses this initial cycle while continuing to explore the artistic ideas that have come to define the project.

There are several qualities that immediately stand out in Ultima Canticum's music, and particularly on this latest release.

First and foremost is the duo's meticulous crafting of soundscapes. Making full use of the wide range of technologies available to them, Bavister and Blazdell treat technology as an intuitive instrument in its own right, working alongside more traditional—albeit modern—musical instruments. The result is music that feels less composed in the conventional sense than carefully sculpted, with sound itself becoming the primary expressive material.

Another defining characteristic is the interconnected nature of the works. Although the music often appears calm, spacious and serene on the surface, each piece is underpinned by a remarkable complexity of sonic layers, computational processes and evolving textures. There is a constant sense that every sound exists for a reason, gradually revealing itself over extended listening.

Psychopomp follows the opening work, “In the Field of Reeds”, and draws upon the idea of spiritual guides and the origins of belief, quietly guiding the listener through emotional and perceptual transitions. Almost functioning as a contemporary tone poem, the release explores ideas surrounding spirituality, philosophy and the afterlife, favouring atmosphere and gradual transformation over traditional musical narrative.

Ultima Canticum also actively challenges the notion that artificial intelligence and computation diminish musical creativity. On the contrary, both musicians embrace the possibilities offered by emerging technologies. Whether through the duo's collaborative work or their individual projects, Bavister and Blazdell consistently explore sonic territories that move beyond traditional compositional practice. This philosophy was already evident in works such as Emergent Soundscape XII and continues with renewed confidence in Psychopomp.

The title track, “Psychopomp”, is the shortest work on the release, while each of the remaining pieces unfolds over more than ten minutes, encouraging slow and immersive listening. “In the Field of Reeds” appears here in an extended version of the piece originally released on NOOX's X compilation in 2025. Altogether, Psychopomp is the longest work Ultima Canticum has produced to date, reflecting an increasing emphasis on long-form narrative development, structural continuity and immersive sonic exploration.

Psychopomp confirms Ultima Canticum's position as one of the more distinctive voices operating between ambient music, experimental composition and sound art. Rather than treating technology as a substitute for creativity, Bavister and Blazdell demonstrate how computational processes can become an extension of artistic expression, resulting in music that is intellectually ambitious, emotionally resonant and quietly absorbing.
