ORIGINS

London, 2026

Origins is a re-release of Affan’s EP, first issued in 2018 on the label Lonely Swallow. It marked his first exploration into modern classical piano: a collection of six impromptus that reflect an spontaneous creative process, a deep interest in melody, and an appreciation for the natural voice of the piano itself. There is something immediately intimate about Origins. It does not seek grandeur or excess, but instead draws the listener inward through subtle gestures and patient development. Across its six short pieces, Affan favours simplicity, clarity and emotional suggestion over overt display. The result is a release that feels personal and unforced, almost like a private journal translated into sound.

A soft touch and gentle tone open “Origin I”. Built around an Alberti bass figure, the piece moves through a series of variations that explore different registers and changing moods while preserving the essence of its opening idea. The music gradually gathers momentum, building towards a modest but satisfying climax before settling once more into calm reflection. It is an elegant introduction to Affan’s language: melodic, understated and quietly expressive. Each piece maintains a strong sense of melodic identity, even when the lines between harmony and melody begin to blur. In “Origin II”, multiple melodic voices emerge from the harmonic framework and exchange roles across the keyboard. As in the opening track, registers become fluid spaces where accompaniment and melody are constantly redefined. “Origin III” turns its attention more towards chordal development, with subtle rhythmic shifts and small changes shaping the piece as it unfolds. It is music of detail rather than declaration, rewarding close listening through nuance rather than dramatic contrast. With “Origin IV”, a more song-like character returns. After the contemplative mood of the previous pieces, it introduces a slightly stronger pulse and a delicate forward motion. Energy builds naturally as the music progresses, before giving way once again to sparser textures and quieter thoughts. There is a sense throughout Origins that movement and stillness coexist comfortably. Melodic development remains central to Affan’s writing, and “Origin V” demonstrates how effectively he can shape a narrative from the simplest materials. Sparse phrases and measured repetition create a feeling of progression without ever forcing it. The music breathes at its own pace. For Affan, there seems to be little distinction between accompaniment and melody. What would traditionally remain in the background often steps into the foreground. This is especially clear in “Origin VI”, where the supporting material carries much of the expressive weight, while melody appears only in brief, scattered gestures. It is a thoughtful reversal of expectation, and one that says much about his compositional instincts.

Much about Affan’s artistry is understated. He is a musician of few words, preferring to let the music speak for itself. Rather than dictating an emotional response, he leaves room for the listener to form a personal connection with the work. There are no heavy concepts imposed in Origins, no obvious instructions on how the music should be received — only space, tone and suggestion. The release embodies that intention fully. Its strengths lie in restraint, sincerity and quiet confidence. What could have remained a simple early work instead reveals the foundations of a distinct artistic voice. As a first statement, and now as a re-release, it remains a thoughtful and rewarding listen.
