Nirit Ziv-Wexler is a classical guitarist, composer and arranger, as well as a visual artist and educator. In her latest project for solo guitar, Morning Walks, the musician finds space and reflection in nature, exploring atmosphere and movement and translating these sensations onto the guitar.

 

A sense of storyline and narrative is important to Ziv-Wexler’s creative process, and with Morning Walks, she takes us on a small musical journey, depicting her own morning walks around the Mediterranean. Rather than simply illustrating the landscape, the four pieces capture different impressions and movements within it, allowing the guitar to become a vehicle for observation.

The project starts with the peaceful “I. Sea View Road”, which slowly unfolds around a few musical themes and melodic fragments. In “II. Birds Gliding”, Ziv-Wexler uses her instrument as a tool to translate impressions and observations of the natural world. Creatively, she evokes the movements of the birds, both gentle and forceful, shifting between lighter gestures and more energetic passages. “III. Uplift” expresses the musician’s desire to put forward the lyrical qualities of the guitar, with a strong sense of melodic storytelling, not to mention a fantastic control of the technical capabilities of the instrument. Finally, “IV. Nature Trail” concludes the journey with a piece which perfectly rounds up the pastoral walk, reflecting on the steady and calm movements and quiet rhythms of walking.

 

In her work, and specifically in Morning Walks, Ziv-Wexler places her attention on creating colour, texture and, most importantly, storytelling. Each piece feels like a small observation rather than a fixed musical statement, with the natural world providing both the subject and the space in which the music develops. A short story in itself, Morning Walks is a great illustration of her ability to turn sensations into music and bring her perception of the natural world to the listener.
